The Synchrony is the first dual-optic accommodating IOL, and is a single-piece silicone lens that has a high-powered 32 D anterior optic joined to a rear minus-powered optic by flexible silicone spring-like struts.
In order to achieve that goal, dual-optic accommodating Intraocular Lenses have been designed, whose anterior optic displaces axially to increase ocular power, and focus near objects.
Although dual-optic accommodating IOLs are relatively new, their outcomes are promising, as they provide large amplitudes of accommodation and a greater IOL displacement than single-optic accommodating IOLs.
Defocus curve analysis suggested a mean accommodative range of 3.22 diopters (D) ± 0.88 (SD) (range 1.00 to 5.00 D) in the accommodating IOL group and 1.65 ± 0.58 D in the control group (range 1.00 to 2.50 D) (Supported in part by unrestricted grants from That Man May See, San Francisco, California, and Research to Prevent Blindness, New York, New York, USA. Chang says that for any moving optic, the resulting amount of accommodative shift is proportional to the dioptric power of the IOL.
