Insane dating game
Last month, Alcala, who is currently held at California State Prison, Corcoran, was charged in the 1977 cold case murder of Christine Ruth Thornton.
At the beginning of the Dating Game episode, Lange asks Alcala to say hello so Bradshaw can hear his voice.
“You couldn’t talk to the judges and you had to be escorted if you had to go to the bathroom,” Reubens recalled.
But over time he became acquainted with Barris, and the two saw each other occasionally after Reubens’ career took off in the 1980s.
Backstage after the show, however, she saw the real Alcala. "He was kind of a creepy guy," Jed Mills, the bachelor next to Alcala, said in 2010.
The couple won tennis lessons and a trip to Magic Mountain, but Bradshaw declined to go on the date. (In another insane twist, Mills would go on to play the fat-free yogurt shop owner on Seinfeld.) "The people [in the audience] were actually snickering and even low-murmuring boos as to his answers," bachelor number three Armand Cerami recalled that year, as well.
"), Bradshaw asks him, "What's your best time?
The money helped him focus on his craft as an actor and comedian with the Groundlings improv group.
“I’ve told people for years that Chuck Barris supported a lot of struggling artists,” Reubens told “I didn’t have to have a second job because of ‘The Gong Show’ for a couple of years.” In truth, contestants weren’t supposed to make repeat visits to “Gong Show.” Reubens had to disguise himself in his various acts lest the show run afoul of the FCC rules that govern game shows following the quiz show scandals of the early 1960s.
He had somehow got on the popular game show The Dating Game despite a 1972 conviction for raping an eight-year-old girl.
Tali Shapiro was raped and beaten with a steel bar, but because her parents refused to let her testify at Alcala's trial, he was paroled in 1974 after spending 34 months in jail on a lesser charge of child molestation. Alcala enjoyed photographing his victims – mostly attractive young women – after murdering them and putting their corpses in distorted, grotesque poses. One was a shrimp burger cooker, which came with a gift certificate to buy shrimp burgers. Reubens also received multiple cans of green paint, which were used to paint the green room at the Groundlings’ Melrose Avenue theater.
